Notes/thoughts:
  • I love having a training plan written and stuff but sometimes I wonder why I bother when it seems like I make changes to it almost on the daily. xD Oh well, a little structure with a lot of flexibility is probably better than no structure and me completely winging it. In any case, decided that I'm going to take Sunday off this week instead of Saturday just because my schedule is complicated and weird over the weekend, so a couple adjustments had to be made to the upcoming plans. The major upside of which is the 2 hour trainer ride I had planned for Friday is being axed in favour of what will likely be a shorter (possibly much shorter) and significantly less painful ride outside with Molly on Saturday! (Don't worry, one of next week's 90 minute trainer rides got bumped up to 120 to compensate.)
  • Swimming! Um I've had no sense of where my swimming has been recently. I swim in a strange lane where the fast people are fast but we try to accommodate for the slower swimmers as best we can as well, so our pace times are generally pretty forgiving but don't actually reflect the pace I'm swimming on any given day very well...So I wanted to do a set I've done before to get a better sense of where I'm at. This set comes from one of my college club teammates, who is a phenomenally talented swimmer, and I like to use it as a test set just to keep track of how I'm doing. I think the last time I swam this, I was strict about keeping to 2 minute intervals on the 100s easy, which changes the dynamic of the set quite a bit, but today I had gone into the workout thinking there was no way I was going to make these, so I gave myself pretty full recoveries between sets and by some strange miracle I made them all!
  • I'm actually super ecstatic about how this workout went down. I got in, I warmed up, I felt absolutely terrible and I was thinking to myself I wasn't even sure if I could hit 1:30s let alone 1:25s. I came in around the 1:16 on the first one and I was like, okay, there's a chance, and pretty much made consistent 1:20s throughout the rest of the set. Normally when I'm only taking 5 second rests, I fatigue pretty quickly but amazingly enough, today that just didn't happen. They felt so steady, actually a lot like what they typically feel like on things like mile or 500 time trials, and I haven't felt that steady since swimming in college when that was more my focus, so I was really happy about that. The stroke is definitely not perfect, but it's coming along and it's definitely better than what it was at the beginning of the year. I also feel stronger in the water, which I know is making a huge impact just in terms of efficiency.
  • The last thing I have to comment on is that I think the aerobic base work is really translating well across the disciplines. Today it felt like the limiting factor in terms of speed wasn't really aerobic but more just technique and power, which is actually exactly what I get to focus on with longer rest "easier" interval practices like what I'm doing at masters swim, so it's perfect! It feels so good to have validation and feel like I'm on the right track. 1:25s aren't really progress per se because this is about where I know I should be, but I had really thought that I'd fallen a lot off of that in the months since college and it's so good to know that I haven't lost it. I'm really happy. It makes me feel like what I do day in and day out is really meaningful and does pay off in the end. Gotta keep plugging. (:
Easy run on the books for the PM after a little bit of hospital time. Gotta get some work done and some groceries bought this morning. What a great way to kick off the day. (:

Much love,
Jess
