This is how you get to where you want to go

[Day 39]

Today was a somewhat amazing day. It was honestly just one of those living the dream days, which wasn't at all how I expected it to go. I decided to axe the swim this morning, made the call last night because I realized that I needed that time to finish up with studying for my histo quiz (that MD has got to be the priority) so I opted out of that morning swim. The quiz went well, I was productive most of the day, I had a great standardized patient session in the afternoon that went way long but was totally worth it and an amazing experience. (We were taking psychosocial histories, which includes the sexual history, and having practice with that kind of history taking is so key.) Then I came home and took my afternoon run in pretty brutal weather (-4C, 16 mph winds, snow) and came out the other side unscathed and extremely proud of myself. It was a simple day, but it was a simple day that I'm really happy about. Here's the update!

Today's Workout: Base run, 7 miles, clockwise loop of Forest Park
Summary: 7.24 mi, 1:09:58, 9:40 pace
Pace splits by mile: 9:32, 9:55, 9:53, 9:58, 9:23, 9:33, 9:43, 8:28
Hit Rate: 41/43 (95.3%)

Notes/thoughts:
  • I wanna talk about the hit rate first, but in order to do that I have to explain something else: I'm going to a dual meet (WUSTL vs SLU) on Sunday which I found out about today via a tri team teammate and although I have yet to receive official confirmation that I can race (the race is with the newly formed swim club, of which I'm not officially a part of), I'm rolling off the assumption that I can. That, in conjunction with missing the morning swim today, led to some changes in my schedule for the week. The end result of which is that instead of going double-double-single for Monday through Wednesday, I'm now going single-double-double and I'm technically not doing any fewer workouts than I was originally planning on, the days just sort of got shifted a bit...
  • So what's up with the hit rate? Well it's technically supposed to reflect the amount I actually train compared to the amount I had planned on/wanted to train when I was first building my schedule. I think in this situation I should probably not be docking myself anything for the missed swim this morning because in reality it was just sort of shifted a day, but I also feel like the hit rate was starting to climb and it actually made me feel really pressured to stay close to perfect (ah yes, those perfectionism tendencies kicking in) and that was a bit stressful. Weirdly enough, I want to reinforce right now that it's okay to do things like decide to drop a workout because my education depends on it. Normally I think I would see that mark against the hit rate as punishment or something, but today it's more like, "oh yeah, I dropped a workout and that percentage went down a bit but it's still above 90% and I'm doing a fantastic job"! It's actually really reassuring. So that's why I ended up taking the point off. I know it's sort of convoluted and weird, but it makes sense to me right now so I'm rolling with it.
  • There were other people running outside today. People who were probably much more accustomed to the cold and way more badass than me, but it made me feel so good to see other people out there too. It all goes back to normalizing the workload. I didn't feel like the weirdo who chose to spend a really cold day outside running for an hour. I felt like just another person out amongst similar people doing something that I love and trying to achieve a goal.
  • On the other hand, there were also a lot of fast people out today, and one of the things that I kept thinking to myself was that this is how I'm going to become one of them one day, this is how I'm going to get to where I want to go. By being willing to be outside and working on cold days when it would be easier to stay in and skip. I don't often like to pat myself on the back for doing things because that's sort of like me spoiling myself and I don't want to become spoiled and bratty when it comes to my attitude about training, but today I definitely did acknowledge that I was doing something that not everyone would be willing to do and that I should be proud of myself for it.
  • Actual run facts: I wanted to stay under 10:00 pace the entire run today, which I did. Figured it was about time to pick things back up to a reasonable-ish easy run speed. It felt harder than a normal 9:40 pace day would've felt, more steady state than actually easy, but that's okay, it'll take a bit of time to get back to where I want to be. The cadence was super solid. Henry's last text to me before my run was to watch my cadence, which was actually a great reminder because I did keep it in mind the entire run and hit a 175 spm average overall. Moving in the right direction! Also longest run since the IT band first flared up!
I have a lot more schoolwork that I need to worry about now, so I will get right back on that and hopefully be able to go to bed at a reasonable hour so I can hit the pool tomorrow morning! I took a chunk of my finger off this morning while washing a chipped bowl and it was bleeding pretty profusely and is now just one big open wound on my hand, so we'll see how that handles the chlorine...On the upside, I have a ride! So I won't need to bike out in the very cold. Yay! Happy Monday!

Much love,
Jess

Kate is fast

[Day 22A]

The main news in my life right now is that my appetite is becoming unbearable obnoxious. I don't think I ever stopped being hungry between the hours of 3 pm and 9 pm yesterday...I pretty much ate until I felt like I was going to make myself sick if I kept eating, and was still hungry...What are these problems. Why. Anyways, I swam. (And got a ride in a warm warm car it was so wonderful not to have to bike in the very very cold thank the universe for lovely teammates.)

Today's AM Workout: CSP practice, IM day
Summary:
  • Everything was swum on whatever pace Kate led the set at...
  • WU: 300 swim (500 as written but we showed up late)
  • Main Set:
    • 4 x 50 kick IMO
    • 400 pull w/ paddles
    • 4 x 50 drill IMO
    • 300 kick w/ fins
    • 4 x 50 swim IMO
    • 3 x 200 pull w/ paddles descend 1-3
    • 6 x 150
      • 1, 4 - 25 fly/back/breast, repeat
      • 2, 5 - free
      • 3, 6 - 50 fly/back/breast
  • WD: 100 easy
  • Total Distance: 3200 SCY
Hit Rate: 21/22 (95.4%)

Kate led my lane today! Even though she really should have been in the fast lane, doing fast lane things. On one hand, it was awesome, because she's great at lane leading and we didn't spend forever on the wall trying to figure out what we were doing and what pace time we were going on. On the other hand, Kate is fast. I don't even think she was trying, she's just fast. I think I had forgotten what trying to swim fast felt like? It doesn't feel super pleasant. xD I really have to get back to treating swim practice with some degree of seriousness. It's not supposed to feel pleasant lol.

Life is pretty standard otherwise. I may be reworking my schedule for next week depending on whether or not it stays cold, because I won't be able to get rides to practice later in the week so maybe it would be better for me to just take my swims at the Athletic Complex at night? We shall see. I'll take a look at the plans over the weekend. As for the rest of the day, there's a trainer ride in the plans this afternoon so I'll report back after that. Lecture is starting so I'm gonna peace out! (:

Much love,
Jess

It's cold outside

[Day 10]

First plan change of the year! (Unless you count last Wednesday? Which wasn't so much a plan change as just a "nope not gonna do that today".) Anyways, Tsehay and I decided this morning that as much as we are total badasses who can take on anything, it was too cold for either of us to want to run outside today (-13 C, feels like -23 C, I may be Canadian but without something to cover my cheeks I'm not going out in that temperature to run for an hour...). xD Side note: props to one of my hardcore cyclist friends for going out and riding today. Beast mode much? Anyways, as a result, I pulled up a planned trainer workout from later in the week and we rescheduled our run for Thursday afternoon. So this is what I did instead today!

Today's Workout: PM trainer ride, 80 mins
Summary:

  • WU: 10 mins easy, 5 x :30/:30 spin ups
  • Pre-set: 4 x 2/1, fast/easy spinning (100+ rpm), focus on smooth pedal strokes
  • Main Set: cadence work, 95 rpm/80 rpm/95 rpm/105+ rpm/recovery pattern
    • 4/4/3/1/2
    • 3/3/2/1/2
    • 2/2/1/1/2
    • 2 mins easy
  • Technique set: 10 x :45/:15 single leg drill
  • WD: 8 mins easy
  • Total: 17.44 mi, 1:20:06, 13.1 mph average
Hit Rate: 9/9 (100%)

The notes/thoughts:

  • Regarding the workout: I did the pre-set and main set on the same gear, which was about threshold at 95 rpm and probably a bit higher than that at 100+ rpm (except for recovery, which I dropped down a gear for).
  • The single leg drill is steadily improving. On like number three I was thinking I wouldn't be able to hold out on the gear I was in but surprisingly enough I got through the entire thing without having to drop down. I think I'm learning the efficiency, slowly but surely.
  • I still need to work on upper body position on harder efforts. When things get hard I do all manner of weird things with my upper body which is totally not how real life riding would work. Have to focus on that more.
  • Today was sort of a crazy day? I had a lot on my plate for some reason, and Sundays are always stressful because I feel a lot of pressure to get my life put together before the week starts, but I think I did alright for myself given it all.
  • Oh this is random but I have to share: I bought cookie dough (which is not a thing that I do) and I made myself a small batch of mini chocolate chip cookies that I ate after my workout (yeah, I know, not real recovery food) and it was delicious and amazing and it made me really happy. And the best part is I still have like 4/5 of the thing of cookie dough left so there will definitely be more cookies to come. Good decisions past-Jess (:
Only one session on the books for tomorrow, a lift in the morning with a short treadmill run, probably much the same if not identical to last Monday. Hopefully it'll tear my body apart a little bit less this week because I would really like not to spend all of it really sore. We shall see. Fingers crossed!

Much love,
Jess

The cold is so key

I'm much faster in the cold. I think it's a combination of being more comfortable and being a taller person that produces more body heat that's hard to get rid of which makes me faster in the cold. I made a point of running in the heat and working on improving my heat tolerance over the summer, but I do feel real good about it cooling down. It makes everything so much more pleasant.

My original plan had been to take today off, but seeing as the weather was threatening rain tomorrow, I decided to just take an easy base run today and switch that for a day off tomorrow, that way I could spend some time with Henry in the morning before a very busy Saturday afternoon. I started out quicker than I was expecting so I thought I would try to stay under 9:00 pace today. I figured the weather was cooperating and I felt pretty good so I just went for it. I didn't even push particularly hard, it was actually a fairly comfortable pace to hold, which surprises me. I had to remind myself not to slow down periodically, but all in all it didn't require much push and it was definitely within threshold. My hamstrings are still pretty tight from Monday's run, which also surprises me because it's been an entire week, but I definitely was feeling them the second half of today's run. All in all it was good though, exactly what I wanted out of an end of the day base run.

Today's Workout: Easy base 7 mi run
Summary: 7.04 mi, 1:02:16, 8:51 pace.
Pace splits by mile: 8:42, 9:00, 8:59, 8:54, 8:51, 8:46, 8:47.
Hit rate: 10/11 (90.9%)

Day off tomorrow! Yay! (:

Much love,
Jess
